Blueberries are an all-star food and a colorful and delicious addition to anything from your morning bowl of cereal to your evening scoop of ice cream.

Blueberries contain antioxidants called anthocyanins, which are responsible for the blue/purple color of these berries. Anthocyanins are more than just pigments — they are powerful antioxidants that have been shown to inhibit free radicals from damaging cells in the body1. This ability suggests that anthocyanins may play a role in cancer prevention2.

Studies suggest that the antioxidant properties of anthocyanins may protect against cardiovascular diseases (including stroke) as well as neurodegenerative disorders of aging, such as Alzheimer’s disease2. Anthocyanins in blueberries may also improve learning and memory.

Blueberry History

The blueberry belongs to the genus Vaccinium. Other berries in this genus include cranberries, lingonberries and huckleberries. The blueberry is one of the few fruits that are native to North America.

Native Americans gathered fresh blueberries for centuries, and revered them so much that parts of the plant were used for medicine. In 1620, Native Americans taught pilgrims in the Plymouth settlement how to gather blueberries, dry them, and store them for the winter.

July is known as National Blueberry Month, because blueberry production reaches its peak during this month.

Where are Blueberries Grown?

North America produces nearly 90% of the world’s blueberry crop. The North American blueberry harvest runs from mid-April through early October. Michigan produces the largest blueberry crop in the United States, followed by Oregon, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Georgia.

  • Sprinkle on top of pancakes or in pancake batter.
  • Mix blueberries in your favorite morning cereal.
  • Blend milk, blueberries and yogurt for a delicious smoothie.
  • Add dried blueberries to your trail mix.

  • Stir in blueberry juice into lemonade or iced tea.


Do not wash blueberries until just before eating or using in your recipes to prevent berries from becoming mushy.

Homemade Wrinkle Cream That Works!

This homemade wrinkle cream has many benefits. Aside from being considerably cheaper than commercial store-bought wrinkle creams, you’ll find it much gentler on your skin and often far more effective.

The recipe below is part of my homemade skin care recipes series, its a combination of beneficial oils along with a nourishing herbal infusion, this makes a perfect anti-wrinkle cream that’s great for tackling any ageing effects on the skin… and it’s very easy to make.

Here’s the deal:

  1. Many commercial anti-wrinkle creams contain harmful ingredients in small quantities. While they might look like tiny amounts, rubbing them into your skin on a daily basis can often compound the cause of wrinkles rather than reduce them. There are no harsh or drying chemicals when you make your own wrinkle creams and other skin care recipes, so your skin will look and feel softer right away.
  2. Aging skin develops fine lines and wrinkles, but there are other signs of ageing that you should be aware of. As we age, our pores appear larger and the skin beneath our eyes can also darken and appear saggy or even puffy. The key to keeping your skin looking and feeling youthful and wrinkle-free is hydration. Drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin from the inside, then use some non-drying homemade wrinkle creams to add to the hydration levels on the outside.
  3. Increased exfoliation, or renewal of the skin cells, also gives your skin a younger, fresher look and feel. However, exfoliation can cause skin irritation in some people. Honey contains natural moisturizing ability, can contain some Alpha Hydroxy Acids and also helps to gently exfoliate your skin all at the same time. Honey also has significant natural antioxidant properties.
  4.  Other ingredients in my effective omemade moisturizers also contain natural antioxidants which play a role in protecting your skin from damage caused by UV rays and in aiding with rejuvenation of your skin cells. Please note that this recipe contains water and has zero preservatives, so remember to use it within 3 weeks. Alternatively adding a preservative at 0.5 gram will increase the shelf life to around four months.

If you are looking for other recipes that last longer you can create a moisturizer that is oil based or contains a preservative which will give you an 18 month shelf life. Having said that if your not giving it as a gift and its just for you.. and I’m not sure why anyone would give this away 😉 then there’s no problem.

Top Tip: I also have some great moisturizers, serums and face oils for you to try. Each method produces a moisturiser that lasts 18 months, so they are great for giving as gifts. Each method also contains variations for each skin type (Mature, Dry, Oily, Problem, Sensitive, Combination). I hope you have as much fun making them as I did!


For best results, use this cream within 2-3 weeks (or adding a preservative at 0.5 gram will increase the shelf life to around four months)

  • 1 1/2 fl oz (40ml) Sweet Almond Oil (Amazon)
  • 1 fl oz (20ml) Calendula Oil (Amazon)
  • 3/4 oz (20g)  Beeswax (Amazon)
  • A handful of Dried Calendula Flowers (Amazon) for infusion method below.
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2 ml) Frankincense essential oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) Lemon essential oil

  • The sweet almond oil in this recipe is excellent for all skin types and is most commonly known for its ability to soften, soothe, and recondition the skin. It’s genuinely wonderful as a carrier oil and is just as fantastic in skin care creams.
  • Calendula is a very effective oil that makes for an excellent base for creams, salves and facial recipes. It’s cooling and gentle on the skin which also makes it fantastic for baby oil recipes. The infusion gives a soothing effect to the cream and is very useful for any dry or flakiness within the skin.
  • Frankincense essential oil will help to slow down the appearance of wrinkles and maybe even help to reduce the extent of the wrinkles you already have.
  • The lemon essential oil helps to banish facial wrinkles, clears the skin and helps to boost circulation. Lemon has a brightening effect on shallow skin, and a mild bleaching effect on age spots that can restore the tone back to your skin, giving it a more youthful look and feel.


  • Measuring jug
  • Sieve
  • Large, heavy – based Stainless steel saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Either dark or clear glass jars with lids (Amazon)


Step 1. With a handful of Calendula flowers and 10 fl oz (300ml)  boiling water, make an herbal infusion. A herbal infusion is made by placing the flowers into a jug, pouring boiling water over them and then leaving it covered to cool. The mixture then needs to be strained and kept in the fridge.

Step 2. In a large heavy – based stainless steel saucepan, melt the beeswax. Add the calendula and sweet almond oils, beating steadily with a wooden spoon or whisk, and then add 2 tablespoons (30ml) of the herbal infusion in a slow trickle.

Step 3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and keep stirring until the cream has cooled to almost body temperature. Add the frankincense and lemon essential oils and then give it another good stir (If using preservative add it here when the cream reaches around 45C).

Step 4. To stop the oil and water separating stir until the cream has completely cooled.

Step 5. Spoon into airtight jars to ensure the essential oils are well preserved, clear jars need to be kept in a dark place.

Step 6. Before you go to bed, cleanse your face and gently rub in the cream going from jaw to cheekbones, around your eyes and over your forehead. Massage the cream into your neck from the base to chin.

A Smoothing Anti-Wrinkle Skin Lotion

This homemade anti wrinkle cream is great for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles in your facial skin, but you can also get some great results when using this lotion on cracked heels or dry hands.

  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon Sunflower Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon


Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Massage the lotion gently into your skin, using a light, circular motion. Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes and then rinse off with water.

A Quick Anti-Wrinkle Moisture Mask

For something a little quicker try this mask.


  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons milk


  1. In a small pot or bowl, mix honey and milk together well.
  2. Smooth the mixture over your face and leave on like a mask for 10 minutes.
  3. Rinse well with warm water. When the mixture is removed from your face, splash your skin immediately with cool water to act as an astringent to reduce your pore size.

A Firming Face Mask

This homemade wrinkle cream is thick enough to be used as a mask. This will help hydrate your skin, smooth out fine wrinkles and firm your skin on your face and neck beautifully.


  • 1 tablespoon Honey
  • 1 Egg White
  • 1 teaspoon Glycerine
  • Approx 1/2 cup Plain Flour


  1. In a small bowl, whisk the honey, egg and glycerine together.
  2. Add a little flour and stir into the mixture. Continue adding small amounts of flour until the mixture forms a thick paste.
  3. Smooth the mixture over your face and throat. Leave on like a mask for 10 minutes and then rinse off completely with warm water.
  4. When the mask is completely removed, splash your face lightly with cold water to act as an astringent.
  5. Store any unused portions in a sealed container in the fridge.

What’s the bottom line?

Fall fashion: Millennial trends underscore effort to look good

The best of 1930s glamour — body-conscious, A-line sheaths and collarless jackets — are joining the coolest of 1970s disco chic (think belted trenches and printed tunics) to create a millennial style that’s as dressy as it is sporty.

And, perhaps, that perfectly defines the modern woman.

Whether for a schoolteacher or CEO, the boss-lady wardrobe requires a level of professionalism that extends beyond the combination of leggings, tunic, blazer and boots.

For fall, fashion experts say, women are investing in better-quality pieces: Dresses and skirts are longer and stop just below the calf. Women also are moving away from chunky cardigans to fine-knit sweaters and blouses featuring cute bows at the neck.

Pants remain slim-fit but not skinny. Shoes, neither stiletto nor flat, are thicker and more comfortable for walking.

Mauve will be a key pastel for winter, but the bulk of the wardrobe palette will go dark. Look for navy blue and burgundy’s gallant return. And, when appropriate, outfits will be topped with a blazer, or pulled together with a fedoralike cloche.

“Young professionals are graduating from law school, completing residencies, and finishing up graduate degrees,” said Nataliya Yermolenko, assistant buyer for women’s clothing at Boyds in Philadelphia. “They are trying to enter the workforce and want to be taken seriously and maybe even appear a little older.”

This doesn’t mean women have abandoned comfort, she said. To the contrary. Elements of “athleisure,” especially easy-to-wear tunics and dresses fashioned from viscose stretch, are among the more sophisticated fall looks.

“The difference is that previously . . ., you were cooler if you looked like you didn’t try,” said Maureen Doron, who owns two boutiques near Philadelphia. “Now, when going to work, a cocktail party, or a charity, we are going to see people put more of an effort into really looking great.”

It’s too early to tell whether glamour is making a comeback, though.

One thing’s for sure: No matter what social ills define a decade — unemployment, racism, poverty, the kind of sexism that makes glass ceilings more like concrete clouds — we often romanticize women’s fashion of the day.

Fashion’s most-glamorous decade was widely considered to be the 1930s — even though everybody was broke. The glamour came from the simplicity of the looks: a sheath that melted into the body, textured accessories, and deep lips.

And now, decades after the Great Depression, ’30s fashion has found its way back.

Actually, two decades are represented among the fall trends.

“They are both decades that feature softer silhouettes and a certain purity of line,” said Clare Sauro, fashion historian at Drexel University and director of the school’s 14,000-piece costume collection. The silhouette of a 1930s Claire McCardell dress, for example, is very similar to a 1970s Halston.

But, Sauro added, it’s not just the drape of the dresses that connects the ’30s to the ’70s. The women of the interbellum generation — born between 1900 and 1913 and entering adulthood by the 1930s — and early baby boomers, in their 20s for most of the ’70s, had much in common.

“The feminine ideal was more assertive,” Sauro said. “The sweet girl next door of the 1920s and the … 1960s grew up.”

In other words, the young women of the ’30s and ’70s decided it was time to dress like a boss.

“When you have less, you spend a little more wisely,” Yermolenko said. “Instead of buying 15 party dresses, my customer is getting just what she needs. She is starting to respect fashion more.”
